Come and play chess at Rugby Art Gallery and Museum - bring friends too

Calling all Rugby Junior Chess players ...
You are invited to participate in a seasonal chess fest on 22 December. This will take place on the ground floor of Rugby Art Gallery and Museum (the glass-fronted room next to the entrance to the Library).
Note that there is a session in the morning for younger (primary school-aged) children and one in the afternoon for older players. If you can persuade people at your school, or at scouts or other clubs, to come alomg that would be great. At the summer event we attracted some new junior players and we would like even more!!!
Parents who play chess are also very welcome and the RAGM requires that any children under 8 should be accompanied by an adult.
Hope to see you there.

Geat start for juniors in the Coventry League !
After a practice on Monday night of how to play with competition rules, clocks and score sheets our newcomers gained a 2-2 draw against an experienced Coventry G team.
On top board Rhys Davies played well to secure a win against Daniels Rowlands - Rhys was the one of our team who had ever played in the Coventry league!
On 2nd board Nicola Carouche won against Trevor Beesley with a very convincing attack.
On board 3 Jonathan Payne had a clear win against Trevor Gazee but threw it away at the end (better luck next time Jonathan), while on board 4 Leo Johnson had long though unsuccessful game against Tomas White. (Leo had had to come back from an all-day school outing to play in the match).
We hope to get some more games in the season so that more of our juniors can play some league chess - particularly with results like this !

Belated report on the Juniors Chess event
Meanwhile, lest we forget quite how much fun this was, here is a picture of Bob slightly flummoxed by the Marvel Super Heros chess set. :-)
It really was a great venue. As you can probably see its like chess in a goldfish bowl. We even attracted the attention of someone who who donated a three-way chess board. Thanks everyone - especially Jessica from RAGM for allowing us to use the room and publicising the event.

Make a date for chess - 12 August 2011
If you are a junior player and would like to flex some chess muscles (aka brains?) over the summer when school is not interfering with chess :-) then come along to Rugby Art Gallery and Museum on 12 August.
Bob, Sue and Chris and several of the junior players will be there to help introduce others to the joys of chess, or pass along tips to improve, or simply play some games to get some practice.
If you have a friend who you feel should know more about chess bring them too. Download poster here.
Note that its on the ground floor in the Art Room and please email rugbyjuniorchess@gmail.com to let us know that you are coming.
Last but not least THANK YOU to Rugby Art Gallery and Museum, especially Jessica, for supporting this event and for keeping the chess table in the museum for drop in chess. Hope to meet some new players.

UK Chess Challenge
The UK Chess Challenge is a junior competition held every year right across the country in schools and junior chess clubs. Players who do well can play in the next stage of the competition which for us is in the Birmingham/Solihull area one Saturday in May. It is usually called the 'Megafinal' and there is a separate one for each county in the UK.
It is not compulsory so if you don't want to take part in the UK Chess Challenge that's fine. The ladder competition will take a secondary role but it will continue. Of course you can always play for fun or challenge one of the adult players.
Hope to see you next time.
Bob and Sue
